The return is pulling the same dust that grays a hallway
The dust that shows up as a gray lane down the middle of a hallway is not staying put on the floor. Some of it is fine enough to lift and travel, and the return grille is what pulls it back through the house every time the system runs.
Cleaning the carpet and leaving the return alone treats half of the same problem. The floor gets the attention, and the air path that keeps reseeding it does not.

Why it belongs on the same visit
The equipment for the carpet or tile job is already unloaded and set up in the house, so pulling the vents and the main return on the same afternoon costs a fraction of what scheduling a stand-alone duct call would take on its own.
It also means both jobs get looked at together, on one appointment instead of two separate ones scheduled weeks apart.

What to expect afterward
Less visible dust settling back onto the floor and furniture underneath the vents, since the source sitting in the ductwork is not still emptying every time the system runs.
The grille itself comes out looking like clean metal instead of a dust screen, and that is a fair way to judge the difference between before and after each time the system pulls air through it.
