Chapter 01
Upholstery is not carpet and cannot be cleaned like it
Fabric stretched over foam over a frame holds moisture with nowhere for it to drain, unlike carpet sitting over a pad and a hard floor. That means lower moisture and more extraction passes rather than one heavy soak.
Over-wet a sofa and the result is a watermark ring where the moisture front stopped, plus a cushion that stays damp on the inside long after the surface feels fine. Both are avoidable with the right technique.

The fiber decides the method before the stain does
What a chair or a rug is actually made of sets what can safely be used on it. A synthetic blend and a natural fiber do not respond to the same process, and using the wrong one can set a stain rather than lift it.
That is the reason a test patch in a hidden spot comes first, not last. It answers the fiber question on the piece itself before any cleaning starts on the visible surface.
Chapter 03
A rug hides what has gone through it
The pile on top of an area rug can look perfectly acceptable while the backing, and the floor underneath it, are carrying the actual problem. That is exactly the pattern with a new puppy in the house.
Cleaning happens in the home rather than off-site, which means the floor under the rug gets seen and dealt with too, not just the part that was visible before the rug got moved.
The same cycle as the carpet it sits on
Most homes are on roughly an annual cycle for upholstery, sooner with pets, small children or allergies in the house. It tracks the same schedule as the carpet around it.
Doing the furniture and the floor in the same visit is worth planning for, because there is not much point putting clean upholstery back down onto carpet that has not been touched.
